Hutchinson CC Sports Information

The Hutchinson Community College women's soccer sophomores remember 11 months ago well.

The 2017 Blue Dragons had a Jayhawk West championship within their grasp. One victory over Cloud County in two games over a two-day period last October would have accomplished just that.

The Thunderbirds had other ideas. Cloud County defeated Hutchinson 3-2 in double overtime and one day later edged the Blue Dragons 2-1 one day later to capture the Jayhawk West title. Cloud County went on to win Region VI and advance to the NJCAA Tournament.

With first place squarely on the line, the Blue Dragons and Thunderbirds cross paths for the first time in 2018. Hutchinson and Cloud County meet at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at the Salthawk Sports Complex. The game will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at 4:55 p.m.

Last Saturday, the Blue Dragons finished off the chase for head coach Sammy Lane's 200th victory in a 2-0 victory at Pratt. That gave the Blue Dragons a 5-0-1 record for 16 conference points (3 points for a win, 1 for a tie). The Blue Dragons are currently tied with Barton for first place in the Jayhawk West. Barton is in that tie for first after Saturday's 5-1 victory over Cloud County in Concordia.

Cloud County is 5-1 (15 points) in the Jayhawk West.

The Blue Dragons tout the second-best offense in the Jayhawk West and the league's best defense with 44 goals four and only five goals allowed through eight games.

Brailey Moeder and Ashley Venegas are the Blue Dragons' active goal-scoring leaders with six each. Megan Maslak, the team's leader with nine goals is out with an injury. Naomi Waithira has nine assists, posting an assist in four-straight games and 6 of the last 7. Moeder has eight assists.

Freshman goalkeeper Taylor Camp is 6-0-1 overall with four shutouts. She had a 0.69 goals-against average and a .722 save percentage.

Cloud County has scored 39 goals, but allowed 17.

Franciele Cupertino is Cloud County's leading scorer with seven goals and 10 assists. Izabella Christina has 10 goals and two assists. Fernanda Peinado had nine goals and an assist. Top goalkeeper Alanya Hannigan is 6-1 with a 2.09 goals-against average and a .618 save percentage.
