Round 1 goes to Cloud County. Round 2 – a most pivotal round for the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team – is less than 24 hours away.

Cloud County took advantage of a Blue Dragon defensive misplay in double overtime and T-Bird Johanna Duliep lifted soft shot just over Clara Bergmuller's hands and under the cross bar for a sudden death goal as the Blue Dragons fell 3-2 in a Jayhawk West battle at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The Blue Dragons fall to 13-2-1 overall, 8-2-1 in the Jayhawk West and 10-2-1 in the region. Cloud County surpasses the Blue Dragons for first place in both the league and region standings at 11-3, 9-2 and 11-2. Northwest Tech is still in play at 8-3.

Monday will be the final day of the regular season. It will be tense as Hutchinson and Cloud County meet again at 1 p.m. in Concordia, while Barton travels to Northwest Tech. If the Blue Dragons win, they repeat as Jayhawk West champions. If the Dragons lose, Hutch could slip all the way to third place in the region and be on the road for the opening round of the Region VI Tournament, which starts next Saturday, October 28.

On Sunday, the Thunderbirds were the immediate aggressors scoring two goals 53 seconds apart just seven minutes into the contest.

Cloud's immediate pressure put the Dragons on their heels and forced a bad clearing attempt that landed right on the foot of Maryamme de Castro, who scored 5:56 into the game for a 1-0 T-Bird lead. Just 53 seconds later, Maria Barbosa played a long ball right to Joana Villanueva, who split the defense and scored to make it 2-0 just 6:49 into the game.

The Blue Dragons mustered very little offense with just three shots taken in the first half. Once the second half started, the Dragons started to sustain much more offensive pressure and finally cut into the Cloud County lead.

Brailey Moeder's great individual effort in pressuring the T-Bird defense to get the ball gave her a scoring opportunity in which she chipped a delicate shot over the hands of Cloud County goalkeeper Alanya Hannigan into the upper right corner for a goal. Hutch trailed 2-1 with 37:44 to play in the second half.

The Blue Dragons scored the equalizer on a other good run down the sideline by Moeder. She waited for support and then crossed to Miykayla Moresco, who ripped a shot from the right side of the box that skimmed the inside of the right post and in for a game-tying goal with 28:51 to play.

Early in the first overtime, Cloud County had some good chances. Bergmuller had one big save off a Cloud corner. The Dragons rushed a corner kick as time was running out in the period.

Then 2:32 into the second overtime, Cloud's Duliep scored the game winner after taking away an errant pass in the box and lifting a perfectly placed shot to end the game.

The Blue Dragons were out-shot 21-6, including 4-0 in overtime. The Thunderbirds had seven corners to Hutch's two.

Bergmuller (7-1) suffered her first loss while giving up her first three goals of the season. She did have a season-high five saves, two coming in a fast sequence in the second half that kept the game at a 2-1 deficit at that point.

Cloud County's Hannigan had to make just one save.

GAME NOTES – This was Cloud County's first-ever win against Hutchinson. The Dragons lead the overall series 12-1. … The Blue Dragons are now 0-1-1 this season in overtime and 7-5-4 all-time in overtime games. … Moeder's goal was her 17th of the season, which is the eighth most in program history by a Blue Dragon freshman and ties for 14th most in single-season history. … With three points on Sunday, Moeder has 45 points for the season, which ranks eighth on the Blue Dragon freshman list and ties for 15th on the single-season list. … Moeder has 11 assists, which ties for 10th on the Blue Dragon freshman list.
