The Hutchinson Community College women's cross country team earned one of its highest national rankings in team history on Wednesday.

The Blue Dragons are ranked No. 12 in the first NJCAA Women's Division I Cross Country Poll. The last time the Blue Dragons were ranked this high was the 2001 National Championship season.

With sophomore Maggie Lambert running the second-fastest time in team history on Saturday at the Missouri Southern Stampede, the Blue Dragons finished ninth in a very tough women's field.

Hutchinson is the fifth-highest ranked Jayhawk Conference/Region VI program in the first poll of the season. Ahead of Hutchinson is Cowley at No. 2, Allen at No. 4, Butler at No. 8 and Colby at No. 9. Hesston College is No. 23 and Dodge City is No. 24.

Iowa Central received eight first-place votes and is No. 1 in the first ranking of the season.

The next rankings will be October 4.

The Blue Dragons next run at the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree on Sept. 30 in Stillwater, Okla.
