WEST PLAINS, Mo. – Sophomore libero Shelby Reeder had a single-match record 37 digs and the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team rallied 12 blocks in a four-set victory over Jefferson College in the Blue Dragons' second match on Friday at Grizzly Invitational at the West Plains Civic Center.
The Blue Dragons had a 1-1 day in Day 1. Hutchinson opened with a 3-0 loss to No. 8 Missouri State-West Plains (16-25, 16-25, 20-25) and then defeated Jefferson (25-15, 25-20, 17-25, 25-18).
Hutchinson is now 15-11 for the season. The Blue Dragons take on No. 12 Tyler Junior College at Noon on Saturday and will play Trinity Valley for the third time this season at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Reeder's 37 digs are a career high and the sophomore libero breaks the record formerly held by Samantha Lackey, who had 36 digs set in 2014. Reeder now has 2 of the 3 three single-game performances for digs in team history.
In addition to Reeder's tremendous performance, sophomore Kristina Head had 12 digs, sophomore Zoe Schmidt had nine digs and freshman Morgan Harvey had eight digs. Schmidt and Harvey led a strong block at the next with nine and eight total blocks, respectively.
Harvey had a season-high 14 kills to lead the Blue Dragons past the Vikings. Head finished with eight kills, freshman Baylee Miller and Schmidt had five kills each. Freshman Setter Andrea Serrano had 20 assists.
Hutchinson is 2-0 over Jefferson this season.
West Plains defeated the Blue Dragons for the second time this season with a sweep in the tournament opener.
Reeder had another strong defensive match with 17 digs.
Head led the Dragons with 10 kills, six digs and two blocks.
Miller had six kills and Chloe Conway finished with five kills. Conway, Cameron Letcher and Tauja Durham had two block assists each.
