DRAGONS DROP FOUR-SET BATTLE AT BARTON

GREAT BEND – Sophomores Kristina Head and Zoe Schmidt posted double-doubles and the Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team had a higher attack percentage and out-blocked and out-dug the Barton Cougars on Friday night.

Still, the Cougars prevailed over the Blue Dragon in four sets – 19-25, 25-17, 25-10, 19-25 – in a Jayhawk West battle at the Barton Gym.

The Blue Dragons saw their three-match winning streak snapped. Hutch fell to 12-8 overall and 4-4 in the Jayhawk West. Hutchinson travels to Seward County on Tuesday. Barton improved 14-8 overall and 5-1 in the league.

After dropping the first two sets – Hutch had a 23-19 lead in the second set before losing 27-25 – the Blue Dragons dominated the third set, hitting .636 en route to a 25-10 victory. Barton quickly responded in the fourth, scoring the first six points of the fourth set and Hutchinson couldn't complete the comeback.

Schmidt's first double-double of the season, consisted of season highs of 16 kills and 15 digs on .462 hitting. Schmidt also had four block assists.

Head had 15 kills and 10 digs in her first double-double of the season. Head added four total blocks and three service aces.

The Blue Dragons hit .310 for the match on 55 kills, 142 attacks and 11 errors. The Dragons out-blocked Barton 8-1 and out-dug the Cougars 74-66. Barton hit .262 on 62 kills, 168 attacks and 18 errors.

Sophie Connor and Morgan Harvey had eight kills each for the Blue Dragons. Harvey also had eight digs, four total blocks and three service aces. Connor added 10 digs.

Freshman setter Andrea Serrano had 39 assists and six digs. Freshman libero Amanda Velez had 12 digs.

Barton was led by Tasiah Nunnery, who had a match-high 17 kills on .455 hitting. Maria Santos had 13 kills on .333 hitting and Mylena Testoni had 11 kills.

SET 1: Tied at 4-all, Barton used a 6-0 run to gain an early advantage. A Nunnery ace and Buse Kocakaya solo block upped the lead to 16-8. Trailing 17-10, the Dragons reeled off five unanswered points and pulled within 17-15 on a Head/Harvey double block. Another Head kill – she had four kills and Schmidt had five kills in the opening set – cut the Dragon deficit to 19-17. The Cougars scored on 6 of the last 8 points in the second. Barton out-hit the Dragons .244-.125.

SET 2: Schmidt had a solo block and a kill on consecutive rallies to give the Dragons a 10-5 lead. Back-to-back Head kills snapped a 6-1 Barton run and start a 4-1 Hutch run. Another Head kill gave the Dragons a 16-12 lead. Leading 20-19, the Dragons built a 23-19 lead and had a 24-22 lead after a Head kill. The Cougars fought off two set points and took a 25-24 lead on a Testoni kill. A Head kill then tied the set at 25, but Barton scored the final two points to win the deuce set.

SET 3: The Blue Dragons scored on 14 of the set's first 17 rallies and never looked back. A Harvey kill gave Hutch a 7-3 lead. A Harvey ace pushed the advantage of 12-4. A Head backrow kill gave the Dragons an 18-6 lead. The Dragons had 15 kills and only one error on 22 attacks in the set. Barton hit .120 on 25 attacks. The Dragons had four aces and two blocks in the set.

SET 4: The Blue Dragons weren't able to sustain the momentum from their dominant third set as Barton scored the first six points of the fourth set. A Schmidt/Harvey double block pulled Hutch within 7-5, but Barton scored on 10 of the next 14 rallies to lead 17-9. Trailing 21-11, the Dragons tried to come back going on a 6-1 run. Head terminated from the back row to pull within 22-17. Kills by Schmidt and Connor drew the Dragons within 23-19, but the Cougars scored the final two points to close out the match.
