GARDEN CITY – The Hutchinson Community College racked up 15 service aces and earned a Jayhawk West sweep on Monday night at Garden City.
The Blue Dragons had 10 or more aces in a match for the sixth time this season in a 25-22, 25-19, 26-24 victory over the Broncbusters.
Hutchinson has won 4 of its last 5 matches and improved 11-7 overall and 3-3 in the Jayhawk West. The Blue Dragons play host to Pratt on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.
The Blue Dragons' service game stressed the Broncbusters all match long. Hutchinson had six aces in the first set, four in the second and five in the final set. Zoe Schmidt, Morgan Harvey and Rachel Easom had three aces each. Sophie Connor had two aces.
The 15 aces tied for the second-most team aces by the Blue Dragons this season. Hutchinson had a season-high 17 aces against Cloud County on September 1. The Dragons also had 15 aces against Rose State on September 10.
Blondie Penaflor lead the Blue Dragons with nine kills. Sophomore Kristina Head finished with six kills and seven total blocks (1 solo, 6 block assists). Connor had five kills and Schmidt had four kills.
Schmidt led the Blue Dragons defensively with 15 digs. Harvey also reached double figures in digs with 10. Connor had seven digs and freshman libero Amanda Velez had six.
Freshman setter Andrea Serrano had 26 assists for the Blue Dragons.
Hutch had some difficulty closing out sets on Monday night. The Dragons led 21-16 in the first set, but Garden City pulled within 24-22 before a Harvey back-row attack fell for a kill on set point. The Blue Dragons owned a 17-8 lead in the second set, but the Busters pulled within 22-19 before Hutch scored the final three points of the set. The Dragons had a 20-11 lead in the third set. Garden City battled back to knot the set at 24-all before a Buster service error and Connor kill closed out the match.
The Blue Dragons posted their sixth sweep of the season.
