DODGE CITY – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team racked up 11 team blocks over the final three sets as the Blue Dragons rallied to defeat Dodge City on Friday night at the Dodge City Student Activities Center.
The Blue Dragons dropped the first set, but rallied to win 22-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-11.
Now 16-14 overall, Hutchinson solidifies its hold on third place in the Jayhawk West at 10-4. The Blue Dragons have two league matches remaining – at Barton on Monday and home on Wednesday against Independence.
The Blue Dragons had 16 overall errors and just one block against a much-improved Dodge City team in a first set loss to the Conquistadors. That win by Dodge City snapped a run of 46 consecutive set wins by the Blue Dragons over the Conquistadors. The last set win by Dodge City over Hutchinson was the fourth set in 2011.
After the first set, though, it was all Blue Dragons, who put up 11 team blocks in sets 2, 3 and 4. Elena Takova led the way with seven block assists. Tara Davis had five block assists and Delilah Vigil had four block assists.
Takova had a match-high 11 kills on .273 hitting. She had two errors in 33 attacks.
Eden Hiebert had nine kills and hit .160 on 25 attacks. Hiebert also had eight digs and two services aces.
Davis hit .600 with seven kills on 10 total attacks. Vigil had six kills on .417 hitting.
Setter Cassidy Crites had 19 assists, nine digs and two aces. Payton Gawith had 13 assists.
Libero Raychel Reed had 17 digs and Claira Creach had nine digs.
