Hutchinson CC Sports Information

The Hutchinson Community College Volleyball Team has one mission on Sunday – return to the Hutchinson Sports Arena to play more volleyball.

The Blue Dragons travel to Liberal on Sunday to play in the Region VI Tournament semifinals. Hutchinson (25-12) will play a suddenly hot Garden City Broncbuster team (11-21) in the second semifinal on Sunday. Top-seeded Seward County plays fourth-seed Colby in the first semifinal.

The championship match will be at 6 p.m. or one hour after the completion of the second semifinal.

The Region VI champion will play in the NJCAA National Tournament Nov. 16-18 at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons swept Dodge City in Tuesday's opening round to advance to the program's seventh-straight regional semifinal.

Sixth-seeded Garden City went on the road and swept third-seed Butler on Wednesday. The Busters held Butler to a negative .057 hitting percentage.

This will be the third-straight season that Hutchinson and Garden City will meet in the postseason. The Blue Dragons defeated Garden City twice in by sweeps in opening-round matches in 2015 and 2016.

The Blue Dragons swept the season series with Garden City, winning both matches 3-0.

At the Sports Arena on August 30, Hutchinson hit a season-high .481 in a 25-14, 25-17, 28-26 victory at the Sports Arena. Garden City hit .148 in the match. Page Hiebert had 14 kills on .480 hitting and Nina Pevic added 10 kills.

In the rematch at Garden City on September 25, the Blue Dragons hit .264 with 15 kills from Hiebert in a 25-17, 25-17, 27-25 victory over the Busters.

For the season, the Blue Dragons are hitting .243 with 12.14 kills per cent. The Dragons are averaging 15.33 digs, 1.97 blocks and 1.35 aces per set.

Garden City is hitting .169 for the season, but is one of the top defensive teams in the league at 15.99 digs per set. The Busters are averaging 10.39 kills, 1.34 blocks and 1.30 aces per set.

The Blue Dragons are bidding for their sixth-straight Region VI finals appearance and fifth Region VI title in the last six seasons. The Dragons have won 10 regional championships since 2004.
