Sophomores Page Hiebert and Katie Jorn both posted double-doubles and Tatyana Ndekwe had another strong blocking game as the Hutchinson Community College Volleyball Team downed the Barton Cougars 3-1 in a Jayhawk West showdown on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

Hutchinson moved within one victory of a sixth-straight 20-win season after a 25-18, 25-23, 23-25, 25-16 conference victory over the Cougars. The Blue Dragons improve to 19-9 overall and 10-2 in the Jayhawk West. Barton falls to 13-12 and 5-7. Hutch sweeps the season series against Barton.

Hiebert broke out of a mini-slump with a .356 hitting night, getting 18 kills on 45 swings with two errors. The posted her seventh double-double of the season with 17 digs. Hiebert added three block assists and an ace serve.

Jorn had her sixth double-double of the season with 28 assists and 11 digs.

Ndekwe led a 10 team-block performance with one solo, six block assists to go with five kills on .364 hitting.

Hutchinson and Barton tied in kills with 48 each. Hutch had a 10-7 block advantage and had four aces to the Cougars' one.

Leonie Wienkaemper had her fourth-straight match with 10 or more kills with a season-high 13 kills. She hit .075 in 40 swings. Nina Pevic had eight kills on .250 hitting. Pevic added one solo blocks and two block assists. Wienkaemper had two block assists.

Libero Raychel Reed had a team-high 17 digs and three service aces. Kelsey Mulligan added 15 digs.

Monique Oliveira had 14 kills to lead the Cougars, but was limited to only five kills in the final two sets after an eight-kill second set. Kate Deterding had 11 kills, three in the final two sets after eight in the first two sets.

Wienkaemper had a big first set with five kills. She had three during a stretch were the Blue Dragons built a 9-6 lead. The teams traded three-point runs as Hutch led 12-9 after a Hiebert kill. Barton pulled within one point three times over the next nine rallies. A Wienkaemper/Ndekwe double block started a 4-0 run that was capped with a Hiebert ace and Barton timeout. Leading 21-18, a Hiebert kill, Barton attack error, Hiebert/Ndekwe double block and Reed ace closed out the opening set 25-18.

The second set featured an unstoppable Oliveira for the Cougars, not to mention six lead changes and nine ties in the first 23 rallies. The Dragons also had to overtime a 19-13 kill deficit to the Cougars in the second set. With Barton leading 12-11, the Dragons went on a 6-0 run that had two Reed aces, kills from Hiebert and Pevic and a solo Pevic block. Reed's second ace of the run gave the Dragons a 17-12 lead. Barton then went on an 8-3 run and tied the match on Oliveira's seventh kill of the set. The set was tied again at 21 and 23 on Oliveira's eighth kill of the set. Lexi Hogan and Pevic had a double block and Hiebert's fifth kill of the set closed out the win for Hutch, which led 2-0 in the match.

Hutchinson had only nine kills and seven attack errors in the third set. Barton had 14 kills, but allowed Blue Dragon points on seven attack errors and five service errors. With the set tied at 12, the Cougars went on a 6-2 run and led 18-14 on a Carolina Goncalves ace. The Dragons answered with a 5-0 run to take a 19-18 lead after a Barton attack error. Tied at 21, Laine Alves scored and the Dragons committed their seventh attack error to fall behind by two points. Kelsie Antcliff's kill closed out Barton's first set victory to keep the match alive.

Hutchinson took charge of the fourth set early scoring on 8 of the first 11 rallies. Leading 9-6, a Hiebert kill upped the Dragon lead to 16-7. Then an Ndekwe/Jorn double block helped the Dragons double up the Cougars at 20-10. Wienkaemper's kill gave Hutch a 24-12 lead. Barton fought off four match points, but Wienkaemper scored for a 25-16 victory. Hiebert had five kills and Wienkaemper added three more as Hutch out-hit Barton 12-7 in the fourth set. The Cougars hit .000 in the fourth set with seven attack errors.

The Blue Dragons will head for West Plains, Missouri, this week to play in their final regular-season tournament, the Grizzly Invitational in the West Plains Civic Center. Hutch will play Panola and Jefferson on Friday and Tyler and West Plains on Saturday.
