TOPEKA – Sophomore Jordyn Picolet earned a second national qualification and did so with a school-record performance to lead the Hutchinson Community College women's track and field team at the Ichabod Invitational on Saturday at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility.
Picolet beat the 2020 record of Louise Cocking by six second posting an NJCAA Indoor national championship-qualifying time of 10:19.29 to finish 11th in the Ichabod Invitational field.
Picolet earned her second national qualifying mark, also qualifying in the 5,000 meters two weeks ago at the Washburn Open. The Blue Dragon women now have six qualifiers heading into next week's Region 6 Championships next Saturday and Sunday in Pittsburg.
There were four other Blue Dragon Top 10 performances on Saturday.
Sophomores Abigail Grantham and Laura Avila moved up the Blue Dragon record charts in the mile run. Grantham posted the fourth-fastest Blue Dragon indoor mile run of 5:16.28, shaving 20 seconds off her previous RP. Grantham placed 19th on Saturday. Avila trimmed 17 seconds off her previous PR in the Mile with a time of 5:23.57, the sixth-fastest mark in Blue Dragon history. Avila placed 33rd on Saturday.
Grantham also posted the seventh-fastest 800-meter time in Blue Dragon history with a 19th-place time of 2:25.97.
Thrower Deisheline Mayer Scott moved up to sixth on the Blue Dragon weight throw chart with a throw of 48 feet, 3 1/2 inches in the weight throw, placing 15th.
One note to a Friday performance at the Ichabod Invitational, thrower Janiel Montaque's shot put top distance of 43-5 1/4 (13.24) meters ranked ninth in the NJCAA and tied for seventh in Blue Dragon history.
