COCKING SETS SCHOOL RECORD, EARNS ALL-AMERICA HONORS IN 3,000

PITTSBURG – Hutchinson Community College sophomore distance runner Louise Cocking added to her impressive career resume on Friday on Day 1 of the 2022 NJCAA Indoor National Championships at Pittsburg State's Plaster Center.

Cocking earned third-team All-America honors on Friday in the women's 3,000-meter finals with a school-record time of 10:25.89. Cocking was fifth in the event.

The Blue Dragon sophomore blitzed the old record of Ruth Limo set in 2002 of 10:31.12.

Cocking, a 2020 NJCAA first-team cross country All-American, now owns two Blue Dragon indoor school record. Cocking set the Mile Run school record two weeks ago at the Region VI Championships. The Blue Dragon sophomore will run in the Mile on Saturday at 2;05 p.m.

Cocking was one of three All-Americans on Friday on Day 1 of the NJCAA Indoor Championships. Pole Vaulters Kiana Brown and Violet Martinez both became two-time All-Americans with fifth- and seventh-place performances on Friday.

Brown, who was a second-team All-American at the 2021 NJCAA outdoor championships in Levelland, Texas, placed fifth on Friday after clearing 10 feet, 4 inches. Martinez was a third-team All-American in Levelland. She was seventh after clearing 9 feet, 10 inches.

The combination of Cocking, Brown and Martinez gave the Blue Dragons 10 team points and are tied with Iowa Central and Pima for ninth place after Day 1. Iowa Western leads the team race with 58 points.

The Blue Dragons had one other event on Friday.

The Blue Dragon Women's Distance Medley Relay just missed the podium with a ninth-place sowing on Friday. The relay team of Cocking, Keneah Romney, Anastasia Meyer and Noel Buckhaults ran a time of 12:44.21. That mark is the third fastest indoor time in both Blue Dragon/NJCAA Indoor championship history and on the all-time Blue Dragon indoor chart.
