EL DORADO – Sophomore Ocean Paul became the first Hutchinson Community College athlete to reach the medal podium at the 2018 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships ay BG Products Stadium.

Paul finished in a tie seventh in the pole vault on Thursday to close out her Blue Dragon career. The sophomore cleared 10 feet for the fifth time this season. Her career high is 10 feet, 6 inches.

Sophomore Alex Rodriguez placed 12th in the hammer throw preliminaries on Thursday. Her top throw of 141 feet, 10 inches was 4 feet short of qualifying for the finals.

Hutchinson's 4x100-meter relay team didn't make the finals on Thursday. The relay team of Tatyanna Hopkins, Tyra Cullum, Morgan Powell and Claire Olson posted a time of 49.51 seconds, which was 14th in the preliminaries.

The Blue Dragons' 4x800-meter relay team of Hannah Schultz, Caitlin Schlickau, Sarah Patteson and Saw Ahmara placed 10th with a time of 10:15.62.

The Blue Dragon women will have a quiet Day 2 of the NJCAA Championships as sophomore Maggie Lambert will be the only Hutchinson athlete to compete. Lambert will run the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
