LUBBOCK, Texas – Adriana Janic completed the most prolific national championship in Hutchinson Community College track and field history on Saturday.
Janic repeated as 60-meter hurdle national champion on Saturday at the 2018 NJCAA Indoor Championships at Texas Tech University and became the first Blue Dragon athlete in history to win three career national championships. She captured the 2018 NJCAA Indoor Pentathlon on Friday.
Seeded third heading into Saturday's finals, Janic blitzed the field by 0.24 seconds, winning the 2018 national title in a school-record 8.33 seconds. Last season, Janic won the finals by 0.14 seconds in a winning of 8.44 seconds, the old school record before Saturday.
Janic becomes the second female Blue Dragon to repeat as national champion in the same event, joining Esther Ikomi, who won back-to-back outdoor shot puts in 1987 and 1988. Kevin Barry and Teddy Poole are the only Blue Dragon men's repeat champions. Barry won outdoor shot puts in 1998 and 1999. Poole won consecutive 200s in 2007 and 2008.
Janic scored 25 of the Blue Dragons' 28 team points, which gave Hutchinson an 11th-place team finish. In addition to winning the Pentathlon on Friday, posting another school record in that event, Janic finished fourth in the high jump on Friday.
Sophomore Alex Rodriguez earned All-America honors with a sixth-place finish in the 20-pound weight throw. Rodriguez top throw was 50 feet, three-quarter inch.
The Blue Dragon 4x800-meter relay just missed the medal stand with a ninth-place finish. The relay group of Sarah Patteson, Saw Ahmara, Caitlin Schlickau and Maggie Lambert ran a time of 10:17.87.
The Blue Dragons were the fifth-highest Jayhawk Conference team in the 2018 championships. New Mexico Junior College won the team championship with 120 points. South Plains was second with 90 points. Barton was the highest conference team to finish fourth with 69 points.
Hutchinson opens the 2018 outdoor season on Friday at Butler Community College in El Dorado.
