HIGHLAND – All-American Adriana Janic scored the first points of the Region VI Indoor Championships on Thursday when she successfully defended her championship in the women's pentathlon at the Walter's Events Center.

Janic dominated the competition winning two of the five events and totaling 3,602 points on Thursday. Highland's Kira Williams was the runner-up with 3,473 points. Janic fell short of her school record score of 3,734 points, but is in good position to qualify for the NJCAA Indoor championships in March.

Janic won the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.15 seconds and scored 959 points. She scored 855 points and won the high jump with a season-best clearance of 5 feet, 7 inches.

Janic was runner-up in the other three events and earned a third individual national qualification.

She qualified in the long jump with a season-best 18 feet, 3 inches to score 717 points. Janic placed second in the shot put going 29 feet, 7 1/2 inches for 466 points. Janic's second-place 800-meter time of 2:37.21 tallied 605 points.

Freshman Tre'Juan Cash is sixth after four events in the men's Heptathlon. Cash has 2,427 points through 4 of 7 events and trails first place Denim Rogers by 440 points.

Cash was fourth in the 55 meters in a time of 6.81 seconds to score 772 points. He was fifth in the long jump at 19-11 1/2 (604 points), seventh in the shot put at 29-10 3/4 (432 points) and tied for third in the high jump at 5-10 1/2 (619 points).

The 55-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters will be the final three events, which will be contested on Friday before the open events will take place at Ahearn Fieldhouse in Manhattan on Sunday.
