RODRIGUEZ, PATTESON LEAD HUTCH WOMEN AT HIGHLAND

HIGHLAND – Sophomore Alex Rodriguez was a double-event winner and freshman Sarah Pattesen joined two career Top 10 charts as the Hutchinson Community College women's track and field team opened the 2018 indoor season with five event wins on Saturday at the Highland Challenge.

The Blue Dragons didn't earn any national qualifications, but have several on the cusp of their respective qualifying standards.

A returning national qualifier, Rodriguez was Hutch's only multi-event winner, capturing both throwing events. Rodriguez won the 20-pound weight throw with a top distance of 45-feet, 7 inches. That moved Rodriguez into eighth place on Hutch's all-time weight throw chart. Rodriguez also finished first in the shot put at 39-8 3/4.

Patteson won the women's 1,000 meters and finished second in the mile run. Her winning 1,000-meter time of 3:21.00 was the sixth-fastest in Blue Dragon history. Patteson's mile run time of 5:43.43 was seventh fastest in Blue Dragon history.

The Blue Dragons had two other event winners on Saturday.

Freshman Saw Ahmara won the 800 meters with a time of 2:05.30.

Freshman Destiny Mathis took the women's triple jump with a top jump of 39 feet, 8 3/4 inches.

The Blue Dragons next compete on Friday at the KC Night Relays in Overland Park.
