DRAGONS EARN FIRST VICTORY IN HOME OPENER

Hutchinson CC Sports Information

Playing against a packed-in defense and a strong north wind, the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team completed victory No. 1 of the spring 2021 season with a 4-0 Jayhawk Conference victory.

Freshman Lani Dickinson had a goal and an assist to lead a Blue Dragon attack that dominated possession all game long with the Broncbusters. Hutchinson out-shot Garden 'city 39-0 with 11 shots on goal.

Dickinson's goal and assist game just 21 seconds apart late in a three-goal first half the finally gave the Blue Dragons some breathing room.

Leading 1-0 in the 44th minute, Dickinson found herself with a clear lane to shoot from about 35 yards out and she hammered a shot over Garden City keeper Kelcie Turner for a 2-0 Hutchinson lead. Just 21 seconds later, Dickinson delivered a cross from the right corner. Freshman Madison Ontjes redirected the pass into the goal with a header and a 3-0 Hutchinson lead.

With a short-handed Garden City team playing 10 players behind the ball, the Blue Dragons controlled possession but were coming up with few scoring chances. Finally, in the 17th minute, Hutchinson broke through when Chiara Stuenkel took a Jennifer Ramirez cross and scored her third goal of the season with a header for a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Dragons had one goal going against the wind in the second half. After a crazy scramble in front of the Garden City goal, Freshman Aimee Maher scored her first career marker with a point-blank shot for a 4-0 lead in the 67th minute.

This was the 29th time in program history that the Blue Dragons held an opponent without a shot taken, the seventh time against Garden City. The Blue Dragons own a 26-0 all-time record against the Broncbusters.

Now 1-1-1 (4 points), the Blue Dragons play host to nationally ranked Butler at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.
