DRAGONS WIN CONFERENCE OPENER WITH SHUTOUT OF BARTON

Freshmen Brailey Moeder and Megan Maslak had scored two goals each to lead the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team to a 6-0 victory over the Barton Cougars in the Blue Dragons' 2017 Jayhawk West opener on Saturday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

Hutchinson improves to 5-0 overall and is 1-0 (3 points) in the Jayhawk West. Barton falls to 1-2-2 and 0-1-1. The Blue Dragons won their sixth-straight over Barton. Hutch has won 12-straight conference matches dating back to 2015.

The Blue Dragons posted their fifth-consecutive shutout to start the season, which is the third-longest run in program history to start a season without allowing a goal. The 2009 and 2012 Blue Dragons started their seasons with six. The run of five-straight shutouts ties for the fourth-longest streak in team history. The streak of 450 shutout minutes is the fifth-longest in team history.

The Dragons dominated the match outshooting Barton 30-5 and producing nine corner kicks to the Cougars' one.

Moeder had a season-high five points with two goals and an assist to lead the Blue Dragons, who tied their season-high output of six goals. In her last three games, Moeder has three goals and four assists.

Maslak had her first multi-goal game of her career with a pair of markers. Sophomore Sheena Nichol had a goal and two assists.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Main (3-0) had two saves in posting her third career shutout.

The Blue Dragons got an assist from Mother Nature on their first goal of the game. Freshman Hailey Burke launched a free kick from just past midfield. With the help of a 20 mph southerly win, the ball carried into the box and bounced into the goal in the 34th minute. Maslak added a first-half goal and Hutch led 2-0 at halftime

Going into the wind, the Blue Dragons had their best offensive half of the season with four tallies against a Barton team that had allowed only two goals in its first four matches of the season.

Nichol made it 3-0 on a header from a Moeder corner kick in the 51st minute. The next two goals came from Moeder, who scored both from Jasmine Blindt assists. Maslak then scored in the 84th minute from a Nichol assist.

MATCH NOTES – Hutchinson is now 15-3 all-time against Barton, including 11-3 in conference-designated matches. … Sheena Nichol moved into 11th place on the career points list with 78. Madison Joyce (2010-11) is 10th with 81. … Nichol tied Joyce for eighth on the career goals list with her 30th career goal. … Hutch now has 132 all-time shutouts in team history. … Main now has an 8-0 record in her Blue Dragon career.
