Freshman Brailey Moeder had a career-high three assists and the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team posted its fourth-straight shutout to start the season after a 4-0 Region VI victory over Hesston College in a battle of undefeated teams on Wednesday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.
The Blue Dragons improve to 4-0 overall and 1-0 (3 points) in the Region VI standings, which are used to seed the Region VI Tournament in late October. Hesston falls to 4-1 (0-1 Region VI).
Moeder became the second Blue Dragon this season to dish out three assists in a single match, joining sophomore Sheena Nichol, who did so against Trinidad State on August 27.
Moeder was credited with the game-winning assist when she fed sophomore Mikayla Moresco for the match's first goal in the 28th minute.
Moeder also assisted on second-half goals by freshman Jasmine Blindt (55th minute) and freshman Megan Maslak (78th minute). Maslak had a three-point game. She assisted on the Blue Dragons' second goal from freshman Yadira Delgado in the 35th minute, which gave the Blue Dragons a 2-0 at halftime.
The Blue Dragons dominated play outshooting Hesston 20-4 overall and 13-1 in shots on goal. The Dragons had nine total corner kicks, eight coming in the second half.
Freshman goalkeeper Clara Bergmuller (2-0) had to make only one save to post her second shutout of the season.
The 2017 Blue Dragons become only the fourth team to post four-straight shutouts to open a season. This team matches the 2010 Blue Dragons with four-straight shutouts. The 2009 and 2012 Blue Dragon teams opened the season with six-straight shutouts.
Hutchinson will open Jayhawk West play at 3 p.m. on Saturday as the Barton Cougars come to the Salthawk Sports Complex to complete a five-match season-opening homestand.
