Phil Anderson is in his second stint as an assistant coach at Hutchinson Community College. His first go-around at HutchCC went pretty well.

As an assistant men’s coach for Steve McClain, Anderson was a part of the Blue Dragon men’s 1994 NJCAA National Championship team.

He nearly won another national title in his first season with the Blue Dragon women’s program in 2014-15. Hutchinson went 36-1, won both Jayhawk West and Region VI championships and advanced all the way to the NJCAA Tournament championship game.

The 2023-24 season will be Anderson’s ninth with the Blue Dragon women’s basketball program. The Blue Dragons have amassed 273 wins with seven trips to the NJCAA Tournament over that span of time. The Blue Dragons have won five Jayhawk Conference championships (2016. 2017, 2020/21, 2021 and 2022) and two Region VI Tournament titles (2017, 2022).

After his tenure with the Hutchinson men’s program, Anderson moved across 13th Avenue and built a state championship basketball program at Hutchinson High School.

In 12 seasons as the Salthawks’ head coach, Anderson rolled up a 172-93 overall record. His 2001 Salthawk team captured the Kansas Class 6A state championship. In 2002, Hutch High returned to the 6A title game, but finished the season as the state runner-up.

Anderson started his coaching career at Lyons High School, serving two years as an assistant (1981-83) and six seasons as head coach (1983-89). Anderson was 72-62 at Lyons; his 1989 squad was a 3A state runner-up.

Anderson spent two seasons from 1989-91 as the head coach at Salina South High School.

A McPherson, Kansas, native. Anderson and his wife, Stephanie, have a son, Hector Amado and one grandchild.

Anderson earned his BA in Physical Education/Health from Bethany College in 1981 and received his master’s in education from Baker University in 2014.
