TONKAWA, Oklahoma – The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team won its 10th-straight season opener Friday night.
Three players scored in double figures as the Blue Dragons rolled to a 79-45 victory over Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa at the NOC Gym.
The Blue Dragons (1-0) won their 38th-straight game, extending a program record. Hutchinson opens at home at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday against Neosho County at the Sports Arena.
Sophomore Hailey Jackson scored a team-high 17 points and posted her second career double-double with a career-high 12 rebounds. Jackson was 8 of 11 from the free-throw line and had a 3-pointer in her performance.
Sophomore Kahlen Norris scored a career-high 14 points on 5 of 7 shooting, going 3 of 3 from 3-point range.
Sophomore Landon Forbes finished with 13 points and six assists in her Blue Dragon debut.
Freshman Katie Duncan finished with nine points, four assists and three rebounds. Freshman Honey Cooney had eight points with two 3-pointers and freshman Dylan Alexander had seven points.
The Blue Dragons shot 36.0 percent (27 of 75) for the game. The Dragons hit 10 of 33 from 3-point range and 15 of 25 from the foul line. The Blue Dragons had a 51-43 rebounding advantage and had 18 assists and only 11 turnovers.
Hutchinson held NOC-Tonkawa to 30.4 percent from the field (17 of 56). The Mavericks were 5 of 30 from 3-point range and 6 of 14 from the foul line. NOC-Tonkawa committed 29 turnovers.
Leila Washington finished with 20 points.
The Blue Dragon hit three early 3-pointeters and jumped out to a 21-16 lead after one quarter. Hutchinson led 39-25 at halftime.
GAME NOTES – The Blue Dragons are 42-9 all-time in 51 season openers. The Dragons are 9-6 all-time against NOC-Tonkawa and won a series record fourth-straight game. … This was all-time victory No. 1,112 and head coach John Ontjes won No. 484.
