The top-seeded Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team makes its 21st appearance in the Region VI Tournament semifinals on Friday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
The Jayhawk Conference champion and tournament top seeded Blue Dragons (31-0) will meet the fourth-seeded Barton Cougars (22-9) in the first Region VI semifinal at 1 p.m. The Hutchinson-Barton winner will play the Dodge City-Butler winner at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena.
The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) beginning at 12:45 p.m. with Sean Boston (play-by-play) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action. The only stream is a pay-per-view stream provided by the KJCCC Sports Network beginning at 12:55 p.m.
The Blue Dragons last appeared in the Region VI Tournament semifinals two seasons ago. Hutchinson defeated Seward County 92-84 en route to defeating Barton in the championship game for the program's ninth Region VI championship in program history.
The Blue Dragons are 10-10 all-time in Region VI Tournament semifinal games and are 67-38 all-time in 47 regional tournament appearances. Friday's game will be the ninth all-time Region VI Tournament matchup. The Dragons are 3-5 against Barton in the first eight meetings.
The Dragons advanced to Friday's semifinals after hitting 12 3-pointers and posting a 32-point first quarter as Hutchinson eliminated Cloud County 90-56 on Tuesday at the Sports Arena. Haley Jackson led five Hutchinson players scoring in double figures with 16 points. Kiki Smith had 15 points.
Barton, the defending Region VI Tournament champion, advanced to the semifinal round with a 67-43 victory over Coffeyville on Tuesday in Great Bend. The Cougars shot 50 percent for the game and had four players scoring in double figures. Vera Ojenuwa had 15 points and seven rebounds while Vivian Unugha had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Over their last six games, Barton has been on an incredible defensive run allowing only 46 points per game.
Hutchinson won both regular-season meetings against Barton this season. The Blue Dragons had a big fourth quarter in a 74-64 win on January 17 at the Sports Arena and held the Cougars to 29.8 percent shooting in a 57-39 win on March 2 in Great Bend.
