The No. 2 nationally ranked Hutchinson Community College looks to go 6-0 in weekend matinees as Hutchinson meets the Independence Pirates for the second time this season on Saturday.
Tipoff at the Sports Arena for the Blue Dragons (20-0, 14-0 KJCCC) and Pirates (12-9, 6-9 KJCCC) is set for 2 p.m.
The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 1:45 p.m. with Glen Grunwald (PBP) and Dan Naccarato (color) calling the action. The game will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network beginning at 3:45 p.m.
The Blue Dragons reached the 20-win mark in a season for the 32nd time in 50 overall seasons Wednesday with a 69-35 victory at Colby. The Dragons held their 11th opponent this season to less than 30 percent shooting. Colby shot 28.0 percent, going 1 of 15 from 3-point range.
Akaysha Muggeridge had 13 points and Journey Armstead had 10 points to lead the Blue Dragons.
Independence dropped an 86-72 decision to No. 13 Dodge City. The Pirates are 4-3 in their last seven games, which includes a 69-62 win over then-No. 8 Butler on January 10 in El Dorado.
The Blue Dragons face another strong 3-point shooting team in the Pirates. Independence is fourth in the Jayhawk in 3-point percentage at 26.6 percent and is fourth in average made 3-pointers at 26.6 points per game.
Merveille Nkoyock is the sixth-leading scorer in the KJCCC at 16.4 points per game. She has a team-high 53 3-pointers and shooting 35.6 percent from deep.
Nkoyock did not play in the first Hutchinson-Independence game, won by the Blue Dragons 73-48. She had been averaging 18.9 points over an 11-game span, but was shut out on Wednesday by Dodge City on 0 of 11 shooting.
The Blue Dragons are 14-0 at the Sports Arena this season. A victory on Saturday would match the 10th-longest home-court winning streak, which was set in the 2015-16 season.
Saturday's game is the 56th in series history between the Blue Dragons and Pirates. Hutchinson owns a 40-15 all-time record over Independence.
