PRATT – Trailing by four points after one quarter, the Hutchinson Community College Women's Basketball team outscored Pratt by 21 points over the final three quarters and extended its winning streak over the Beavers to 16 games on Tuesday at the Beaverdome.
Sophomore Morgan Browning scored all of her career-high 19 points in the second half and Leata Te-Nana Williams provided a late burst of energy in the final minute of the second quarter to lead the No. 12-ranked Blue Dragons to a 74-57 victory over the Beavers.
Hutchinson improved to 8-1 overall and 2-1 in the Jayhawk Conference. The Blue Dragons play host to No. 15 Barton at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena.
The Blue Dragons trailed 18-14 after one quarter. Hutchinson started the second quarter with a 12-3 run to take a 26-21 lead with 4:20 remaining in the period. Pratt then scored six unanswered points to take a 27-26 lead with 2:45 to play.
The Dragons finished off the half on a 9-0 run, which was highlighted by two tremendous plays by Te-Nana Williams. With 42 seconds left, Te-Nana Williams cut to the hoop and scored on a Mya Williams assist. Then with 3 seconds remaining and Pratt inbounding after a made Dragon free throw, Te-Nana Williams stole a Pratt inbound pass and scored at the buzzer to give the Dragons a 35-27 halftime lead.
The Blue Dragons extended that 9-0 run to end the first half to 17 unanswered points with an 8-0 run to begin the third quarter. Browning capped the run with a steal and layup to build a 43-27 lead with 6:05 remaining in the quarter. The Blue Dragons held Pratt scoreless for 7 minutes, 33 seconds.
Pratt got as close as nine on two different occasions in the second half. Each of those runs were snapped by Browning. She had a personal eight-point run with two 3-pointers and two free throws to extend the Dragon lead to 60-43 with 7:02 remaining in the game.
Browning hit 6 of 10 total shots, going 3 of 3 from 3-point range to score a team-high 19 points. Browning added three assists, three steals and three rebounds.
Both Kali Howard and Monae Duffy posted double-doubles in the victory.
Howard had her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Duffy's double-double consisted of 12 points and 14 boards.
Mya Williams finished with 15 points and six rebounds. Journey Armstead had six points and tied a season high with 10 assists.
The Blue Dragons finished shooting 37.3 percent (25 of 67), hitting 4 of 10 from 3-point range and 20- of 31 from the foul line. The Blue Dragons owned a 54-36 rebounding margin with 19 offensive rebounds. The Dragons had 13 turnovers.
Princess Anderson had 21 points on 13 of 16 shooting from the free-throw line to lead the Beavers. Emily Acton had 13 points.
Held 23 points under its 80-point-per-game scoring average, the Beavers were held to 27.6 percent shooting (16 of 58), going 4 of 22 from 3-point range and 21 of 24 from the foul line. The Beavers had 18 turnovers.
