Hutchinson CC Sports Information

The No. 9-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team had things pretty easy in its season-opening victory on Tuesday night.

The competition ramps up this weekend for the BSN Sports Tipoff Classic at the Sports Arena.

Hutchinson (1-0) meets the Mineral Area Cardinals on Friday and takes on the NEO Golden Norse (0-0) on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Barton is the fourth team in the Classic. The Cougars play each day at 1 p.m.

The matches were exactly the same for the Blue Dragons in last year's BSN Sports Tipoff Classic. The Blue Dragons defeated Mineral Area 75-66 last season. Hutchinson then defeated NEO 66-51 one night later.

The Blue Dragons opened the 2022-23 season on Tuesday with an 88-44 vicotry over the Bethany College JV at the Sports Arena, Hutchinson's 22nd-straight season-opening victory. The Dragons shot 48.0 percent and hit 10 3-pointers, while holding the Swedes to 25.8 percent shooting and forcing 21 turnovers.

Sophomore Mya Williams led all scorers with 21 points, going 3 of 7 from 3-point range. Freshman Monae Duffy hit three treys and added 19 points. Sophomore Kali Howard posted her first career double-double with career highs of 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Mineral Area started the season wtih a 69-66 victory over John A Logan on Tuesday. Lexi McCully scored 28 points with four 3-pointers to the the Cardinals. Katelyn Chomko had 15 points.

NEO opens the season on Friday with Barton.

Now with 424 career victories on the Blue Dragon bench, head coach John Ontjes is No. 2 all-time Jayhawk Conference and Region VI coaching victories. Ontjes trails only Cloud County's Brett Erkenbrack in those categories.
