Blue Dragon Sports Information

No matter what happens on Wednesday, the No. 20-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team will be celebrating a Jayhawk West championship.

Whether it is shared or outright is dependent on what the Blue Dragons do against Colby in the 2021 regular-season finale at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

Hutchinson is 17-4 overall and 16-4 in the Jayhawk West. The Blue Dragons hold a one-game lead over both Barton and Seward County. The Cougars play host to Dodge City and Seward County at Pratt in Liberal on Wednesday.

A victory on Wednesday over Colby would give the Blue Dragons back-to-back outright Jayhawk West titles, the 11th in program history. A win would also give the Blue Dragons a first-round bye for the upcoming Region VI Tournament, which begins on Monday at home sites across the state.

A loss would bring a series of tie-breakers into play depending on what both Barton and Seward County do.

Colby enters the game on a five-game losing streak and a record of 4-15 overall and 3-15 in Jayhawk West play.

Records withstanding, Wednesday's game for the Blue Dragons present a bit of peril on several front.

First and foremost, the Blue Dragons just 48 hours earlier suffered their worst loss of the season after Barton sank 15 3-point field goals in a 77-58 win over Hutchinson in Great Bend. Add to the mix that Colby pushed the Blue Dragons hard on March 13 in Colby, a 62-57 Dragon victory.

Colby used a 17-0 run early in the game to build a 12-point lead, but the Blue Dragons rallied to tie the game at 23-all by halftime. Kalyn Ervin scored 14 points in the second half, scoring 11 in the fourth quarter to help the Blue Dragons complete the comeback. Lojong Gore had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Blue Dragons in the first game with Colby. Kerrigan Johnson had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Kiarra Henderson finished with 11 points.
