Hutchinson CC Sports Information

The No. 22-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team and rival Seward County will do battle again just 12 days after the Blue Dragons won a 73-72 thriller in Liberal.

Tipoff for the rematch is an hour earlier than normal, at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Sports Arena. The Hutchinson-Seward County men's game was canceled.

Like nearly every Hutchinson-Seward County women's basketball matchup since 2009, the stakes are high for both teams. Hutchinson (14-3) has a one-game lead over Seward County (12-4, 12-4) and Barton. (13-4, 12-4). After Saturday, there are only four more games remaining in the regular season.

Twelve days ago, the Blue Dragons rallied from eight points down in the fourth quarter and survived the 39-point effort of Seward County's Sierra Morrow and 29 turnovers for a one-point victory. Ishante Suttington broke the tie with a free throw after being fouled with 0.7 seconds to play in regulation.

Since then, the Blue Dragons have played four times, going 3-1, which includes Wednesday's 72-51 victory over Northwest Tech at the Sports Arena. The Dragons hit 11 3-pointers and got a team-high 15 from Tor'e Alford in the victory.

Seward County has been even busier with six games played since March 8, posting a record of 5-1 over that stretch. The Saints defeated Cloud County 101-86 on Friday afternoon in Liberal. Morrow topped her performance against Hutchinson with 41 points against the Thunderbirds on Friday at the Green House.

The Blue Dragon defense - No. 2 in the KJCCC and No. 17 in the NJCAA - will go up against the highest-scoring offense in the KJCCC Saturday. Seward County ranks No. 1 in scoring average (85.7 ppg), made 3-pointers per game (10.4). The Saints also are No. 1 in takeaways (28.1), steals (15.1) and blocked shots (6.3).

Hutchinson, in the first meeting at Seward County on March 8, held the Saints to 29.6 percent shooting and out-rebounded the Saints 51-39.

Suttington and Nafatoumata Haidara had 14 points each in the first Seward game.
