The road traveled that is the 2021 basketball season has been long and strange for the Hutchinson Community College women. Over the last week, the Blue Dragons encountered even more sharp, challenging turns as they try to navigate their way to a repeat Jayhawk West championship.

The Blue Dragons make a stop in Colby at 2 p.m. on Saturday to play the last-place Trojans in the Colby Community Building.

Since Monday, the Blue Dragons (11-3, 10-3 Jayhawk West) have seen some monumental course changes to their season. Last Monday, Ishante Suttington hit a free throw with 0.7 seconds to play for a 73-72 victory at Seward County. That win left the Blue Dragons in sole possession of first place in the league.

Just 48 hours later, playing without team leader Tor'e Alford, Barton snapped Hutchinson's seven-game overall and 26-game home-court winning streak with a 63-49 win over the Blue Dragons. Now the Blue Dragons, Cougars and Saints are all in a log jam atop the Jayhawk West, all three with three league losses.

The Blue Dragons were unable to produce any consistent offense after building an early six-point first-quarter lead against the Cougars. K.K. Adams had a team-high 13 points to lead Hutchinson. Suttington was next with nine points.

Hutchinson plays a Colby team that isn't a prototypical last-place opponent.

Outside of a pair of blowout losses to Cowley and Seward County, the Trojans (3-9, 2-9) have been within striking distance of most opponents this season. Colby has a much-improved offense that is averaging 61.6 points per game and the Trojans are the No. 1 free-throw shooting team in the KJCCC at 67.2 percent.

Five Colby players average at 8.0 points or better led by Marveen Ross at 13.2 points per game and Kiarra Henderson at 12.8 points per game.

With the conference race tight, the Blue Dragons once again enter a key and busy stretch with eight games remaining. Hutch is back on the road Monday to play at Dodge City before meeting Northwest Tech on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.
