Hutchinson CC Sports Information

The No. 17-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team goes on the road for the season time this season, looking for a different result than the first trip away from the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons travel to Independence, second place in the Jayhawk East at 5-1 and 3-1 in league play, for a 5 p.m. tipoff at the ICC Fieldhouse.

Hutchinson is 4-1 at home this season. The lone road trip was a 56-50 loss at now-No. 16 Butler. The Blue Dragons have shot 45.4 percent at the Sports Arena this season, but the Dragons 29 percent in the loss at Butler.

The Blue Dragons rebounded from that loss with a 76-44 victory over Cloud County on Saturday at the Arena. Lojong Gore scored a career-high 17 points and Hutchinson's defense held Cloud County 30 points under its scoring average and limited the Thunderbirds to 21.9 percent shooting.

The Blue Dragons are allowing 51.0 points per game. Hutchinson's opponents are shooting 30.2 percent overall and 21.5 percent from 3-point range.

Independence has won two in a row, defeating Dodge City 67-64 at Dodge City this season. Maisa Marcal scored 17 points to lead the Pirates. The Pirates are now coached by former Dodge City and Iowa Western head coach Jim Turgeon.

The Blue Dragons' KJCCC second-ranked defense will be put to the test as Independence boasts the No. 4-ranked scoring offense at 78.3 points per game. The Pirates are No. 1 in the league in 3-point shooting at 35.2 percent. Defensively, the Pirates are allowing 66.5 points per contest.

Five players average in double figures for the Pirates led by Marcal's 13.5 points per game. The Pirates are 3-1 at home this season with the only loss coming against Northwest Tech on January 30.

The Blue Dragons have won three games in a row over the Pirates and 18 of the last 19 in the series after a 61-51 victory last season also at the ICC Fieldhouse.
