COFFEYVILLE – The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team raced out to a 16-point lead after one quarter against Coffeyville on Wednesday night and never looked back.

The No. 13-ranked Blue Dragons won their 2018-19 Jayhawk West opener 81-45 over the Red Ravens at Nellis Hall. Hutchinson snaps a two-game conference-opening losing streak.

Hutchinson improves to 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the Jayhawk West. The Blue Dragons will play host to Independence in the conference home opener at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena. Coffeyville falls to 0-9 and 0-1.

The Blue Dragons outscored Coffeyville 21-5 in the first period. The Dragons hit 7 of 13 total shots, while holding Coffeyville to 1 of 11 shooting with five turnovers. Coffeyville didn't score its first points until the 4:46 mark of the opening period with a free throw. The Ravens' only field goal came at the 3:11 mark of the period.

The Dragons parlayed that opening-quarter performance to a 46-19 lead at halftime. The Dragons scored 25 points in the second quarter on 9 of 14 shooting.

Hutchinson's defense overwhelmed Coffeyville's struggling offense. The Red Ravens shot 9 of 45 overall and 1 of 13 from the 3-point line. The Ravens scored more points from the foul line (26) than on total field goals (19). The Dragons also forced 23 Red Raven turnovers.

Four players scored in double figures to lead the Dragons led by freshman Abby Ogle's season-high 16 points on 5 of 6 shooting. Ogle added three assists, two rebounds and two steals.

Freshman Makayla Vannett overcame a tough shooting start to finish with 13 points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers. Vannett added five assists and a pair of steals.

Sophomore Dejanae Roebuck posted her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Keely Tini came off the bench to add 10 points and four rebounds.

The Blue Dragons made 31 of 55 total shots (56.4 percent), going 7 of 20 from 3-point range and 12 of 19 from the free-throw line. The Dragons had a 40-23 rebounding advantage, but committed 23 turnovers. The Dragons had 25 assists on 31 makes.

Tatiana McCree led Coffeyville with 17 points, going 13 of 17 from the free-throw line.
