DODGE CITY – When Dodge City presented the Hutchinson Community College softball team opportunities, the Blue Dragons graciously took them on Monday.
The Blue Dragon took advantage of a combined 12 Dodge City errors to sweep the Conquistadors at Legends Park. Hutchinson run-ruled Dodge City 12-2 in five innings as the Conquistadors committed seven errors. The Conquistadors then had five errors in Game 2, including two major miscues in the seven and eighth innings as Hutchinson rallies for a 7-4 victory in eight innings.
The Blue Dragons improve to 23-13 overall and 13-7 in the Jayhawk East. Hutchinson travels to Independence on Thursday. Dodge city is now 12-16 overall and 7-11 in the Jayhawk West.
GAME 1 RECAP
Hutchinson had only eight hits in the first game, but scored three runs in the first, four in the second and fifth in the third. Eight of the Blue Dragons' 12 runs were unearned.
Natalie Bevan, Easton Head and Alexis Way had two hits each to lead the Blue Dragons. Way and Carley Sterneker had doubles. Five different Blue Dragons had RBIs in the game with Bevan and Head driving in two each.
Bevan gave the Dragons a 1-0 lead in with an RBI single in the first. Head made it a three-run inning with a two-run single that plated Bevan and Sterneker. Bevan's other RBI game in the third, which made it 12-0 Hutchinson.
Lexi Williams stole three bases to become the first Blue Dragon to reach 40 steals in a season (42). She is also the first Blue Dragon in history to reach 70 career stolen bases (71).
Jordan Galliher reached the 10-win mark (10-3) after 4 1-3 innings. She allowed four hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out three. Galliher carried a shutout into the fifth when Dodge City scored a pair.
Sadie Loney pitched the final outs to complete the run-rule victory.
GAME 2 RECAP
The Blue Dragons trailed 4-2 heading into its final at-bat of Game 2.
Hutchinson tied the game after Haley Miller reached on an error and stole second to start the rally. She scored on Madison Grimes' RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-3. After taking third on another error, Grimes scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 4-all.
After the first two batters in the top of the eighth were retired, Williams singled and stole second. Miller then singled to center to drive in Williams with the go-ahead run and took second on a Dodge City error. Grimes tripled in a run and scored on a Bevan single to complete a three-run inning for a 7-4 Hutchinson lead.
Loney worked around a Blue Dragon error with two-out in the eighth to earn the victory. Loney pitched 5 1-3 shutout innings with just one hit allowed. Loney struck out six.
Miller had a career-high four hits, going 4 for 5 with four runs scored. She also struck out a career-high three bases.
Head was 3 for 4 with three singles. Grimes and Bevan had two hits each and both drove in two runs.
The Blue Dragons have five total stolen bases.
