IOLA – After being run-ruled in Game 1 by Allen on Monday, Hutchinson Community College sophomore pitcher Megan Davis stepped up when she had to.

Davis scattered seven hits and posted her first career shutout as Hutchinson defeated Allen 5-0 in the second game of a non-league doubleheader on Monday to snap a five-game losing streak by the Blue Dragons.

The losing streak reached five as the Red Devils downed Hutchinson 9-1 in five innings in the first game.

The Blue Dragons are 5-7 heading into Tuesday's Jayhawk East doubleheader at Independence.

GAME 2 RECAP
Davis needed only 77 pitched to finish off her first career shutout and Hutch's first shutout of the season. She walked a season-low one and struck out four in scattering seven hits, only one was for extra bases.

The toughest inning for Davis to get through to protect her shutout game in the fourth. With Hutch leading 2-0, Allen's Sam Greininger doubled to lead off the inning and Madisyn Thompson walked to represent the tying run. Davis got Chelsey Henry to hit into a fielder's choice that moved Greninger to third with one out. Davis got another ground ball and a strikeout to get out of the inning unscathed.

Davis had baserunners in 6 of her 7 innings pitched. She ended the game in grand fashion as second baseman Shelby Felvus and shortstop Caitlin Schumacher turned a line-out double play on the final play of the game.

Hutchinson utilized an error to start the third inning to take the lead. After Schumacher reached on a fielding error, she scored to batters later on Alexis Way's RBI single to center. Way scored after a two-out RBI single by Sabrina Luttig for a 2-0 lead.

The Dragons tacked on some insurance runs in the fifth and sixth. Brynne Stockman singled home A.J. Briones in the fifth for a 3-0 lead. Hutch bumped to 5-0 in the sixth on Ashley Wilson's leadoff homer and a Way RBI single in the sixth.

The Blue Dragons had 11 total hits with doubles from Briones, Felvus, Schumacher and Stockman and Wilson's home run. Way went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a pair of RBIs. Luttig, Stockman and Schumacher also had two hits each.

GAME 1 RECAP
The Blue Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Way walked, stole second base, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.

From that point, nothing else went right in Game 1 for Hutchinson.

Allen retaliated with four runs in the bottom of the first with four runs and then scored three in the fourth and walked off with two runs in the fifth inning to hand Hutch its first run-rule loss of the season.

Allen pitcher Ashtyn Jurging allowed only two Hutchinson hits – a leadoff triple to Way and a single to Briones.

Freshman Madison Lewellen (1-4) went 3 1-3 innings to take the loss in the circle for the Blue Dragons. She allowed five hits, six runs and three walks while striking out one. Stockman went the final 1 1-3 innings.
