Hutchinson CC Sports Information
With the calendar turning to October, Saturday's Red Devil Invitational begins a key stretch of the season for the nationally ranked Hutchinson Community College Cross Country Teams.
The No. 2-ranked Blue Dragon men and No. 6-ranked women will run on back-to-back weeks for the only time this season – Saturday at Iola and next Friday at the Bethel Invitational in North Newton. These are also the final two regular-season races before the Region VI Cross Country Championships on October 28 in El Dorado.
The women's race in Iola begins at 10 a.m. with the men's around approximately at 10:45. There will be no fans allowed on the course for the event.
For the Blue Dragon men, who have their highest national ranking in team history, Saturday will be their first regulation 8,000-meter race. That should have happened on September 19 at the Muthama-Rogers Invitational, but that race was inadvertently ran at only 4 miles.
Hutchinson finished second two weeks ago with sophomore Teagan Flanagan finishing as the individual race runner-up for a second-straight meet. Sophomore Andrew Holt had his best career placing with an 11th-place showing and freshman Cameron Delaney posted a second-straight Top 20 finish with a 19th-place effort.
Only Iowa Central is ahead of Hutchinson in the USTFCCCA/NJCAA Division I men's rankings. Iowa Western, Butler and New Mexico Junior College round out the Top 5. Cloud County (No. 7), Colby (No. 8), Highland (No. 10), Dodge City (No. 12) and Fort Scott (No. 14) are Region VI teams in the national rankings.
The Blue Dragon women dropped one spot to No. 6 after a fourth-place showing at the Muthama-Rogers Invitational on September 19.
The Blue Dragons' top two runners posted times ranked in the Blue Dragon Cross Country all-time Top 15.
Freshman Louise Cocking's 12th-place time of 19 minutes, 10.31 seconds in her first collegiate 5K race, as the fifth-fastest 5K time in Blue Dragon history. Sophomore Sheila Too ran a career-best time two weeks ago of 19:27.55, which ranks 13th on the all-time Blue Dragon list.
Hutchinson is the third-highest Region VI Team in the latest USTFCCCA/NJCAA Division I women's rankings. Iowa Central remains No. 1 followed by Colby, Cloud County, Southern Idaho and New Mexico Junior College.
Dodge City (No. 8), Butler (No. 9), Barton (No. 13) and Coffeyville (No. 15) are other Region VI women's teams in the national rankings. The next rankings will come out on Wednesday.
