GAINESVILLE, Florida - Hutchinson Community College freshman Leo LeGrand wrapped up a tremendous first indoor season with a national runner-up finish in the 1,000 meters on Saturday at the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The freshman from Mansfield, Texas, became the first Blue Dragon athlete since 2021 to finish as a runner-up after posting time of 2:26.25 on Saturday. LeGrand qualified for the 1,000-meter finals with a top-qualifying and PR time of 2:25.58 on Friday, which is the second fastest 1,000-meter time in Blue Dragon history.

This season LeGrand posted the second-fastest 1,000-meter time, the third-fastest 800-meter time and the fourth-fastest Mile time in Blue Dragon indoor history.

LeGrand is the first Blue Dragon men's track athlete first or second in an individual national event since 2021 when Teegan Flanagan was national runner-up in the 5,000 meters.

Blue Dragon athletes competed in two other events on Saturday.

The Blue Dragon 4x400-meter relay team of Rickyle Telemaque, Ezekiel Seamster, D'Antonio Warren and Elisha Williams bested their Region VI championship time with a time of 3:17.16, which placed 12th in the 2024 championships. That time is the third-fastest 4x400 relay indoor time in program history.

Sophomore Christian Darrah placed 20th in a time of 4:18.02 in the Mile run on Saturday. That time ranks as the seventh-fastest time in program history.

The Blue Dragons finished 18th in the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Championships with 11 team points. Indian Hills captured the men's team title with 91.5 points. New Mexico Junior College was second with 84 points.

The Blue Dragons open the outdoor season on March 23 at the Mark A Phillips Invitational in Arkansas City.
