After setting a school record on Saturday at the Washburn Open, Hutchinson Community College freshman Christopher Johnson was named the Jayhawk Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week.

Johnson cleared 15 feet, 8 inches (4.80 meters) to place sixth at the Washburn Open.

That vault eclipsed the Blue Dragon indoor pole vault record of Andrew Pope. That mark also ranks No. 1 in the NJCAA Indoor season.

Johnson has already qualified for the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in March in Gainesville, Florida.

Johnson is the second Blue Dragon to earn KJCCC Weekly honors. David Thid was named Athlete of the Week on January 24.
