HOBBS, New Mexico – Day 1 of the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships was suspended after rain and lightning halted action after the women's 4x800-meter relay on Thursday at New Mexico Junior College.

The only Hutchinson Community College men's track and field athletes to complete Day 1 competition were pole vaulters Nathaniel Hein and Braydon Peterson.

Hein, the 2023 Region VI champion, just missed the medal podium with a ninth-place performance with a clearance of 14 feet, 4 inches (4.37 meters).

Peterson finished 11th on Thursday after clearing 13-10 1/4 (4.22m).

Several Blue Dragons were unable to compete on Day 1 because of the weather.

Sophomore distance runner Carsyn Turpin will now run the 10,000-meter finals at 8:15 a.m. on Friday morning. Turpin will be the only Blue Dragon men's athlete to compete on Day 2 of the national championships.

Hurdler Sharim Hamilton, who was set to run the 400-meter hurdles and the 4x100-meter relay team of Omari Smith, Hamilton, Cameron Campbell and Ezekiel Seamster were to have run preliminary heats on Thursday night. Those events have been moved to Saturday and will be contested as timed finals.
