COFFEYVILLE – Pole vaulter Nathaniel Hein won a regional championship and led the Hutchinson Community College men's track and field team to am eighth-place finish on Saturday at the Region VI Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Veterans' Memorial Stadium.

Hein posted a personal record on Saturday by clearing 15 feet, 1 3/4 inches (4.62 meters). That is the fifth-best pole vault in the nation this season and the fifth-best vault in Blue Dragon outdoor history.

The Blue Dragon scored 13 points in the pole vault on Saturday. Brayden Peterson placed sixth after clearing 14-2 (4.32m).

The Blue Dragons scored 48 team points over the three-run run of the championships. Barton narrowly won the team title 143-142 over Cloud County.

Hutchinson placed in eight individual events and in two relays.

The Blue Dragons earned two new national qualifiers for the NJCAA Championships in two weeks in Hobbs, New Mexico and have 11 total qualifiers for the season.

Both qualifiers came the 110-meter hurdles. Sophomore Darrien Holloway finished fourth in Saturday's finals with a PR and national qualifying time of 14.51 seconds. He qualified for the finals in eighth place with a time of 15.68 seconds. Alexander Holt was fifth in the finals with a PR and qualifying time of 14.54 seconds. He was seventh out of qualifying after a time of 14.61 seconds.

Sophomore Sharim Hamilton posted the third-best 400-meter hurdle time of 52.73 seconds, placing fourth in the region.

Other Region VI players for the Blue Dragons were:

+ Douwe Bentsink and Christian Darrah placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Bentsink's time was 10:07.62 and Darrah posted a time of 10:24.41.

+ Holt finished sixth in the high jump after clearing 6-3 1/2 (1.92m). James Knowles also cleared 6-3 1/2 to finish seventh. Knowles had a PR in the event.

+ Hutchinson's 4x400 relay team of Donovan Bryant, Omari Smith, Ezekiel Seamster and Hamilton placed sixth in 3:19.21.

+ The Blue Dragon 4x800 relay team of Evan Avitia, Bentsink, Tokiwa Armstrong and Darrah finished sixth with the season-best time of 8:07.64.

+ Noah Raigoza placed seventh in the javelin throw at 152-6 (46.48m).

+ Carsyn Turpin placed seventh in the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:3.41.

+ Caleb Manning was eighth in the long jump at 22-2 1/2 (6.77m).
