GARDEN CITY – Hurdler Sharim Hamilton was a regional champion and the Blue Dragon men's track and field team earned two more national qualifiers as the Blue Dragons placed eighth on Saturday in the Region VI Track and Field Championships at Broncbuster Stadium.

Hamilton won the 400-meter hurdles on Saturday with a time of 54.09 seconds, his second-best time of the 2022 season. Hamilton ranks fourth in Blue Dragon track history in the event with a time of 53.83 seconds.

Hamilton just missed on qualifying as part of the 4x400-meter relay team. The relay of Davion Gardenhire, Dimetre Browne, Clyedterrious Thompson and Hamilton placed sixth on Saturday with a time of 3:17.20. That mark was sixth-best in Blue Dragon history. Hutchinson's 4x400 relay had already qualified for nationals.

Hutchinson's 4x100 relay punched its ticket to nationals with a sixth-place performance on Saturday. Browne, Thompson, Gardenhire and Donovan Hines ran a qualifying time of 41.32 seconds, which is the fifth-fastest time in Blue Dragon history.

Freshman Caleb Manning also qualified in the triple jump. Manning placed fifth on Saturday with a top jump of 48 feet, 1.25 inches, a personal record.

The Blue Dragons did pick up another qualifying from action on Friday as Hines qualified in the 100 meters.

Hutchinson will have 11 individuals and relays qualified for the NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be May 19-21 at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson.

The Blue Dragons finished eighth at Region VI with 46.5 points. Cloud County won the team title with 109 points. Barton and Coffeyville tied for second with 100 points each.

Simon Steinert and Braydon Peterson scored 10 points for the team in the pole vault. Steinert was third at 13 feet, 5.75 inches. Peterson was fifth after clearing 12 feet, 11.75 inches.

Sophomore Aaron Geissinger placed fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after a time of 10:19.03.

National qualifier Antonio Cooper placed fifth in the shot put at 51 feet, 6.25 inches.

Donovan Bryant placed eighth in the high jump at 6 feet, 1.5 inches.
