HINES SPRINTS INTO NATIONALS IN 60 METERS

WICHITA – Sophomore Donovan Hines let the 60-meter field at the Wichita State Herm Wilson Invitational know that he meant business on Saturday.

Hines became the sixth Hutchinson Community College men's track and field athlete to qualify for the NJCAA Indoor Championships in March with a third-place showing in the 60-meter finals on Saturday.

Hines, the only Blue Dragon to punch his ticket for nationals on Saturday, ran a finals time of 6.89 seconds. Hines made his national qualifying run in the preliminaries, posting the top-qualifying time of 6.87 seconds. Hines is the second Blue Dragon to earn a spot in the nationals in the 60 meters. Cleydterrious Thompson qualified earlier this season.

Hines had one of six Top 3 performances at the Herm Wilson Invitational.

The Blue Dragons swept the top two spots in the 60-meter hurdles. Darrien Holloway won the finals with a time of 8.35 seconds. That time ranks fourth best in team history. He qualified fourth with a pre-liminary time of 8.50 seconds. Alexander Holt finished second in the 60-meter hurdles, posting a career-low time of 8.36 seconds. That time ties for the eighth-best time in Blue Dragon indoor history. He qualified second for the finals with a preliminary run of 8.40 seconds.

Sophomore Antonio Cooper, a national qualifier from earlier in the season, placed second in the shot put with his second-best performance of the season at 50 feet, 5.5 inches.

Freshman Caleb Manning had a strong day for the Blue Dragons after finishing second in the triple jump at 44-10.25. Manning was also fifth in the high jump (6-2.75 - PR) and fourth in the long jump (20-11.75).

Davion Gardenhire placed second in the 400 meters with a time of 51.66 second. Hines placed sixth in the 600 with a time of 52.38 seconds.

Jovan Jackson placed third in the 600 meters after posting a time of 1:23.50.

Other Top 5 performances for the Blue Dragons on Saturday were:

+ Thompson was fifth in the long jump after going 20-9.5. Andrei Fuentes was right behind in sixth at 20-4.75.

+ Jobe Fowles was fifth in the triple jump after a leap of 47-0.25.

+ Sharim Hamilton was fifth in the 600 with a time of 1:26.50. He also finished ninth in the high jump after clearing 5-10.75.

The Blue Dragons will next be in action in two weeks at the 2022 Region VI Indoor Championships on Feb. 19-20 at Pittsburg State's Plaster Center.
