KIBARAR BREAKS OWN 5,000-METER SCHOOL RECORD

PITTSBURG – Hutchinson Community College sophomore distance runner Sylvestre Kibarar broke the Blue Dragon 5,000-meter school record for the second time this season on Friday during the first day of the Region VI Indoor Championships at Pittsburg State University's Plaster Center.

The Plaster Center track must agree with Kibarar because he broke the Blue Dragon 5K record earlier this season at the Pittsburg State Invitational.

Kibarar broke his own record with a fourth-place and Hutchinson record time of 14:51.74. His earlier record was 14:52.32.

Freshman Teagan Flanagan also scored for the Blue Dragons in the 5,000 meters and ran a PR in the event. Flanagan finished seventh with a time of 15:28.49.

Kibarar and Flanagan have already qualified for the national indoor championships in the 5,000 meters.

The eight points scored in the 5,000 meters helped the Blue Dragons to fifth place after Day 1 with 14 points. Cloud County and Coffeyville have run away from the pack after the first day. Cloud County leads with 54.5 points. Coffeyville is second with 34 points. Barton is third with 34 points.

Other Day 1 Highlights for the Blue Dragons are:

+ Raul Orduna was seventh in the pole vault at 10-8 1/4.

+ The Blue Dragon Distance Medley Relay of Andrew Holt, Jovan Jackson, Zach Haxton and Jacob Mcelhanon was fifth with a time of 10:45.87.

+ Kaden Whittington is currently ninth after four of seven events in the Heptathlon with 2,076 points.

+ Sprinter Jared Scott qualified for the finals in the 200 meters with the eighth-fastest preliminary time of 21.65 seconds. Scott missed the 60-meter finals with the 10th-fastest preliminary time of 6.87 seconds.

Day 2 of the Region VI Championships start at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
