NEWMAN WINS HIGH JUMP TO LEAD DRAGONS AT REGION VI

Freshman Richard Newman added a couple of new highlight to a freshman year full of them on Saturday at Gowans Stadium.

Newman captured the No. 6-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's track and field team's second individual regional championship on Saturday winning the Region VI high jump.

Newman's victory in the high jump was one of nine events the Blue Dragons scored in on the final day of the Region VI Track and Field Championships. Newman joined teammate Anthony Gallardo as Region VI event champions. Gallardo on Friday won the javelin to become Hutch's first regional champion since 2014.

Newman also helped the 2018 Blue Dragon 4x100-meter relay team break its own school record on Saturday. Running the anchor leg, Newman with Alex Grays, Kadrin Williams and Donovan Whitmore broke their own record by .07 second with a Region VI third-place time of 40.58 seconds.

Pole vaulter Myles Hansen was a regional runner-up and Jayhawk West champion after clearing 14 feet, 8 inches on Saturday.

Tre'juan Cash finished second in the 110-meter hurdles. He ran a time in the finals of 14.41 second. Cash's preliminary time of Friday of 14.30 seconds was a PR and the fifth-fastest time in Blue Dragon history.

Others scoring points for the Blue Dragons on Saturday:
+ Michael Bryan finished fifth in the discus with a PR 149 feet, 4 inches.
+ Kadrin Williams was fifth in the 200-meter finals with a time of 21.32 seconds.
+ Garet Johnson was seventh in the shot put at 46-4 1/4.
+ Jeffrey Muiruri was seventh in the 400-meter hurdles at 56.21 seconds.
+ Denilson Whitmore was eighth in the 400 meters at 48.84 seconds.

The Blue Dragons finished sixth in the Region VI team standings with 63 points. Barton won the team titles with 213 points.

Hutchinson finished fourth in the Jayhawk West standings with 89 points.

The Blue Dragons will next compete at the NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at BG Products Stadium in El Dorado on May 17-19 in El Dorado.
