Freshman Anthony Gallardo became the first Hutchinson Community College men's track and field athlete to win a Region VI Outdoor Track and Field individual championship in four years on Friday, doing so in the Blue Dragons home turf.

Gallardo won the men's javelin throw at Don Michael Field on Friday with a throw of 197 feet, 8 inches. Gallardo was more than 6 feet better than the runner-up throw.

Ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA and a national qualifier, Gallardo became the first Blue Dragon men's athlete to win a Region VI championship since Andrew Pope, who won the regional pole vault in 2014.

The Blue Dragons picked up 14 team points in the men's javelin throw on Friday at Gowans Stadium. Sophomore Trey Teeter finished fifth in with a throw of 181 feet, 2 inches. Teeter's season-best throw moved up to No. 7 in the NJCAA.

The Dragons had two other players in field events on Friday.

Freshman Richard Newman qualified for the NJCAA Championships in the long jump after a season-best jump of 23 feet, 10 1/4 inches. Newman is the 16 Blue Dragon national qualifier.

Sophomore Matt Bryan placed sixth in the hammer throw at 166 feet, 6 inches.

Jared Stark scored in the men's 10,000 meters with a sixth-place time of 33 minutes, 42.69 seconds.

The Blue Dragons had three qualifiers from Fridays' preliminary events on the track.

Sophomore Kadrin Williams qualified in both the 100 and 200 meters. Williams posted the third-fastest 200-meter preliminary time of 23.17 seconds. He was the eighth-fastest qualifier in the 100 meters in 10.55 seconds.

Hurdler Tre'Juan Cash had the second-fastest preliminary time in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.30 seconds, his best time of the season.

The Blue Dragons are fifth after 5 of 22 events in the team standings. The Dragons scored 19 points on Friday. Cloud County leads the men's team race with 49 points.

Field events on Saturday begin at 10 a.m. and running events at Gowans Stadium begin at Noon.
