LAWRENCE – Freshman Richard Newman performed well on another big stage with a second-place finish on Thursday at the KU Relays.

Newman was one of three athletes – Fort Hays State's Kolt Newell and Avila University's Josh Benford were the others – to clear 6-feet, 8 3/4 inches on Thursday. Newell was the only one of the three to clear that height. Newman made it on his second attempt.

All three missed at 6-10 3/4 and Newman, the 2018 NJCAA Indoor national runner-up, placed second based on number of misses.

Earlier this season, Newman placed second at the Jayhawk Classic indoor meet.

Newman had a two-event day on Thursday for the No. 6-ranked Blue Dragons. He finished 12th with a jump of 21 feet, 7 1/2 inches and didn't qualify for the finals.
