DRAGONS EARN 3 MORE ALL-AMERICANS ON NJCAA DAY 2

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Hutchinson Community College men's track and field team had one school record broken and two other athlete earned All-America honors as the Blue Dragons finished out the 2018 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field championships on Saturday at Texas Tech University.

The 14th-ranked Blue Dragons finished 15th in the championship with 19 total points. They were the fourth-highest-placing Jayhawk Conference team.

The Blue Dragons closed the 2018 championship out in impressive fashion as the 4x400-meter relay team of Fred Gonsalvies, Donovan Whitmore, Denilson Whitmore and Elijah Smith broke their own school record of 3 minutes, 14.42 seconds.

Running in the third of five heats, the Dragons finished second behind Central Arizona with the top two times through the first three heats. The Dragons remained on the medal stand through the final two heats, but was bumped up to seventh in the final standings when Hinds was disqualified for stepping out of its lane.

One day after freshman Richard Newman was the national high jump runner-up; two other Blue Dragons earned All-America honors and worked their way high up the career indoor charts on Saturday.

Freshman sprinter Devon Henderson placed fourth in the 60-meter finals with a time of 6.75 seconds. That is the third-fastest 60-meter time in Blue Dragon history. Henderson had the fourth-fastest preliminary time entering the finals.

Freshman Tre'juan Cash placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.95 seconds, the second-fastest time in Blue Dragon history. Cash was sixth entering the finals.

One other Blue Dragon competed on Saturday. Michael Bryan placed 11th in the 35-ound weight throw at 51 feet, three/quarter inch.

The Blue Dragons open the outdoor season on Friday at the Butch Reynolds Invitational on Friday in El Dorado.
