HANSEN’S REGION VI TITLE IN POLE VAULT LEADS DRAGONS

MANHATTAN – Freshman Myles Hansen was the top performer in what was a very strong performance for the No. 12-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's track and field team on Sunday at the 2018 Region VI Indoor Championships at Ahearn Fieldhouse.

Hansen was the only Blue Dragon individual regional champion on Sunday. That helped the Blue Dragons place fourth overall in the Region VI men's standings and third overall in the Jayhawk West standings. The Blue Dragons places in 12 individual events and all three relays on Sunday.

Hansen claimed the Region VI championship in the pole vault. Hansen cleared 14 feet, 5 1/2 inches.

The Blue Dragons had three regional runner-up finishes on Sunday.

Tre'Juan Cash posted the sixth-fastest preliminary time in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.49 seconds. He then ran the second-fastest 60-meter hurdle time in Blue Dragon history at 8.06 seconds in the finals to finish as regional runner-up.

Alex Grays placed second in the 200 meters with a time of 21.76 seconds.

Hutchinson's Distance Medley Relay placed second in 11:09.12.

The Blue Dragons had three placers in the 60-meter hurdles. Grays finished fifth in the finals in 6.83 seconds. Kadrin Williams was sixth in 6.85 seconds and Devon Henderson was seventh in 6.89 seconds.

In other Blue Dragon performances on Sunday:

+ Elijah Smith was third in the 600 meters with a time of 1:23.14.

+ Richard Newman scored nine points with a third-place showing in the high jump at 6-9 1/2. He was sixth in the long jump with a leap of 22-11 3/4.

+ Jeffrey Muiruri placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.33 seconds.

+ Hutch's 4x400 relay was fourth in a season-best 3:16.72.

+ Donovan Whitmore posted a PR in his fifth-place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 22.04 seconds.

+ Michael Bryan was fifth in the 35-pound weight throw at 51-1.

+ Connor Kaufman was sixth in the mile run in a time of 4:31.47.

+ Hutch's 4x800 relay team placed sixth in a season-best 8:18.24.

+ Jason Luft placed eighth in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:39.27.

+ Jared Stark was eighth in the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:53.32.

The Barton men won the Region VI and Jayhawk West championships. Barton scored 186.5 points in the regional standings, followed by Cloud County with 177 points, Coffeyville with 95.5 points and Hutchinson with 89 points.

Barton narrowly defeated Cloud county 227-219 in the Jayhawk West standings. Hutch scored 133 points to finish third.

Hutchinson will next compete at the NJCAA Indoor Championships on March 2-3 at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.
