PITTSBURG – For the second-straight day, the Hutchinson Community College men's track and field team broke a school record at the Gorilla Classic.

The Blue Dragon men's 4x400 relay team broke a school record with a strong ninth-place finish at the Plaster Center in a record time of 3 minutes, 16.84 seconds.

The relay team of Fred Gonsalvies, Donovan Whitmore, Denilson Whitmore and Elijah Smith bested the old record of 3:17.90 set in 1987.

One day earlier, Alex Grays broke the 200-meter indoor record. These records are the first time a Blue Dragon indoor record has been broken since 2007.

The Blue Dragons picked up one more national qualifier on Saturday as freshman Jared Stark earned a spot in the men's 3,000 meters. Stark finished 13th at the Gorilla Classic with a time of 8:53.86.

Freshman Richard Newman placed second in the high jump in Pittsburg with a clearance of 6 feet, 10 1/4 inches.

Devon Henderson continued to perform well, finishing sixth in a packed field with Division I athletics in a time of 6.86 seconds in the 60-meter finals.

Tre'juan Cash posted a season-best 8.14 seconds in the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries, which was the eighth fastest. He was disqualified in the finals.

HIGHLAND CLASSIC
The Blue Dragons set several athletics to the Highland Challenge on Saturday.

Freshman Garet Johnson set a PR in the men's shot put with a runner-up throw of 48-1 1/2.

Freshman Patrick Hartung also set a PR in the men's weight throw at 40 feet, 1/2 inch to finish second in the event.

There were six other Blue Dragons who were runners up in Saturday.

D.J. Norman was second in the high jump at 6-2 3/4.

Reece Kay finished third in the triple jump at 38-4 1/4.Marcus Edwards was second in the 55-meter finals at 6.48 seconds.

Aaron Shannon was second in the 400 at 52.74 seconds.

Grant Clothier was runner-up in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:35.68.

The Blue Dragon 4x400 relay was second in 3:36.20.

The Blue Dragons begin regional action this week. The Region VI Heptathlon/Pentathlon will be Thursday and Friday at Highland and then the Region VI Indoor Championships will be at Kansas State University's Ahearn Fieldhouse on Sunday, February 18 in Manhattan.
