Hutchinson CC Sports Information

NEWTON – Day 2 of the NJCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship was pretty similar to Day 1 for the Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons on Wednesday.

The Dragons had a strong start, then struggled through the middle holes only to grind to a good finish in the second round at Sand Creek Station. Hutchinson shot a 3-over-par 291 on Wednesday and is in ninth place at the halfway point of the 2023 Championship.

Round 3 of the 72-hole event is Thursday with Blue Dragon tee times from Noon to 12:40 p.m. Hutchinson will be paired with Blinn and McLennan for the third round on Thursday.

The Blue Dragons made an early move on Wednesday led by sophomore Dominic Clemons who had birdies on Nos. 1, 3 and 4 and Hutchinson was 4-under par through four holes and up to a tie for fifth after starting the round eighth in the team standings.

Over the next 10 holes, the Blue Dragons played 8-over par with the Blue Dragons registering only two birdies over that span of holes. The Dragons closed the round with birdies from Marco Anderson on Nos. 16 and 18 and birdies on No. 18 from Louis Galvin and Clemons to finish the round 3-under par over the final three holes to close at 291 on Wednesday.

Now at 4-over 580 for 36 holes, the Blue Dragons are in ninth place through two rounds. Team leader Indian Hills is at 14-under par 562. The Warriors shot 4-under 284 on Wednesday. New Mexico Junior College had a team-low round of 11-under 277 on Wednesday and trails Indian Hills by one stroke. Midland and Western Texas are tied for third at 572.

The Blue Dragons counted scores of 71 from Clemons, 72 from Galvin, 73 from Blake Saffell and 75 from Anderson.

Galvin leads the Blue Dragons through 36 holes at 1-over par 145, which is tied for 38th. Galvin started the day 2-over par through four holes, but closed the round with 12 pars and birdies on Nos. 5 and 18 to post an even-par 72.

Clemons shot the Blue Dragons low round of the day at 71 with five birdies and four bogeys. He closed his round with a short downhill birdie putt on No. 18. Clemons is tied for 50th at 3-over 147.

Saffell and Lindstrom are also tied at 147 with Clemons.

Saffell had one birdie and two bogeys in the second round. Lindstrom shot a 78 in the second round.

Anderson was 4-over par through nine holes, but mixed in three birdies and two bogeys on the back nine to finish with a 75. Anderson is tied for 62nd at 4-over 148.

New Mexico's Matthis Lefevre birdied No. 18 on Wednesday to take a one-stroke lead at 7-under 137. There is a three-way tie for second at 138 with New Mexico's Will Green, Indian Hills' Gaspar Glaudas and first-round leader Keith Hunter of Wallace State.
