NEWTON – The best team round of the 2017-18 season has the Hutchinson Community College men's golf team one round from a return to the NJCAA National Tournament.

The Blue Dragons shot an opening-round 1-under team round of 287 on Monday at Sand Creek Station Golf Course, which puts the Blue Dragons fourth overall through 36 of 54 holes. The final round will be Tuesday in an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start at Sand Creek Station.

Hutchinson had rounds of 287 and 294 for a 36-hole total of 581. The Blue Dragons trail third-place Iowa Western by two strokes and leads fifth-place Garden City by 15 strokes and Barton by 17 strokes. No. 1-ranked Indian Hills leads the tournament after shooting a staggering -19 under 557. Dodge City is second at 4-under 572.

Hutchinson needs to be one of the top four teams to earn an 18th-consecutive appearance in the NJCAA championships in May at Lubbock, Texas.

Cole Gritton and Doug Rios-Ceballos led Hutch's best round of the season with rounds of 2-under 70 and 1-under 71 on Monday. Andrew Rios-Ceballos and Matthew Percy both shot 1-over 73s. The Dragons were in second place after the opening round.

Doug Rios-Ceballos shot an even-par 72 in the second round. He was 3-over through 10 holes before playing 3-under over the final eight holes to lead the Blue Dragons in the second round. Andrew Rios-Ceballos also shot a 72 in the second round. Gritton and Percy both shot 75s.

Doug Rios-Ceballos is currently tied for sixth at 1-under 143. Andrew Rios-Ceballos and Gritton are both tied for 10th at even-par 144. Percy is tied for 23rd at 150. Max Smith is tied for 28th at 154 after rounds of 79 and 75.

Individual player Lake Leroux is tied 33rd at 156a after rounds of 81 and 75.

Julian Sale of Indian Hills had rounds of 65 and 70 to lead the individual race at 9-under 135.
