DRAGONS RACK UP 139 POINTS IN VICTORY OVER LABETTE

The No. 6-ranked Hutchinson Community College Men's Basketball team had the second-best scoring night in the 91-year history of the program on Wednesday night at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons shot 51.0 percent from the field and sank 16 3-pointers as Hutchinson downed the Labette Cardinals 139-84 at the Sports Arena.

Hutchinson improved to 4-0 to start the season. The Blue Dragons play Victoria College and Wilber Wright College this weekend on a neutral floor in the Barton Cougar Classic in Great Bend.

When the Blue Dragons reached 112 points with 6:51 to play, thoughts of breaking the 1991 scoring record of 148 points against Frank Phillips were starting to occur.

A 3-pointer by Ty Frierson helped the Blue Dragons reach No. 10 on the scoring list at 125 points. A Trey McClure 3-pointer with 2:01 left helped the Dragons reach No. 5 on the all-time list. Jackson Leyba drilled a 3-pointer with 21 seconds left to move into No. 2 past a 1992 game where the Dragons scored 137 points against Navarro.

The Blue Dragons shot a season-high 51.0 percent (52 of 102). For the third time in four games, the Dragons had at least 16 3-pointers in the game, going 16 of 39. The Dragons were 19 of 28 from the free-throw line.

Eight different Blue Dragons scored in double figures led by Aaron Franklin's 21 points. Franklin was 8 of 9 shooting overall and 3 of 4 from 3-point range. Franklin added six assists.

Freshman Kernan Bundy had a season-high 17 points on 7 of 11 shooting with two 3-pointers.

Leyba had a season-high 25 points, hitting 3 of 4 from distance. Leyba added six rebounds, four were offensive boards.

Frierson knocked own three 3-pointers to score 14 points. Frierson added a season-high eight assists with five rebounds and three steals.

Dedrevious Weathers finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Antonio Green had 12 points and eight rebounds. Ra'Sean Frederick and Jayden Garrison had 11 points each. Garrison also collected a career-high nine rebounds.

The Blue Dragons amassed 33 assists in the game, second-most in Blue Dragon single-game history. The Dragons out-rebounded Labette 67-33 and had 14 steals and seven blocked shots.

Kamryn Edwards led the Cardinals with 19 points. Brandon Taylor added 14 points. Labette shot 45.9 percent (28 of 61), hitting 3 of 12 from 3-point range and 25 of 44 from the foul line. The Cardinals committed 27 turnovers.

The Dragons led just 20-14 with 14:40 left to play in the first half. Hutchinson then held Labette without a field goal over the next 4 minutes, 57 seconds and used a 17-2 run to break the game open. A Kieran Carr layup gave Hutchinson a 37-16 lead with 9:43 remaining in the first half.

The Dragons closed the first half with an 11-2 run over the final 1:27 to lead 66-39 at halftime.

The Blue Dragons had two more big scoring runs in the second half. A 16-2 run early in the half upped the Dragon lead to 87-50 with 14:55 remaining. Another 9-0 run moved the lead up to 42 at 98-56 with 11:46 to play. The largest Dragon lead of the game was 57 points. Hutchinson outscored Labette 73-45 in the second half.

GAME NOTES – The Blue Dragons are now 34-14 all-time against Labette. … The 55-point margin of victory is the second largest in series history. The Dragons defeated Labette 110-51 in 2001.
