Somebody's five-game winning streak will come to an end on Wednesday night as one of the Jayhawk Conference's best rivalries renews itself when the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team will entertain the Barton Cougars.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
First place in the Jayhawk West, the Blue Dragons (10-3, 9-3 in the Jayhawk West) are riding a season-long five game winning streak after a dominant second half an in an 88-70 victory at Garden City.
After starting the season 2-4, Barton (7-4, 6-4) has reeled off five consecutive victories. After a scheduled Monday contest with Colby was postponed, the Cougars played Tuesday night in another make-up game and defeated Neosho County 83-86.
Over each team's winning streak, the Dragons and Cougars have created their surges in different ways.
The Blue Dragons are doing it with defense. Hutchinson is allowing 74.0 points per game in the last five games. Barton has averaged 90.2 points offensively over its five-game winning streak.
Against Garden City on Saturday, Hutchinson trailed by five points at halftime, but outscored the Broncbusters 46-23 in the second half. Matt Mayers posted his seventh-straight double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Josh Baker scored 16 points while Chris Robinson and Isaiah Bujdoso had 12 each to lead Hutchinson, which shot 47.0 points and had a season-low seven turnovers.
Jaheim Holden came off the bench to score 25 points and Justin Harmon scored 24 points in Barton's Tuesday night win over Neosho County. The Cougars knocked down 11 3-pointers,
Holden leads five Cougars, who average in double figures at 15.9 points per game. The Cougars have four players who average better than 14 points per game ... DeSean Munson (15.0), Holden (14.5) and Asanti Price (14.0).
Blue Dragon head coach Steve Eck and Barton head coach Craig Fletchall continue to be neck-and-neck in the all-time KJCCC coaches wins list. Eck is third at 459 and Fletch is fourth at 458.
