Hutchinson Community College sophomore men's basketball player D.J. Mitchell has signed with Florida International University, making him the second Blue Dragon sophomore to decide where he will play next season.
Mitchell joined Saquan Singleton (New Mexico) as 2020 sophomores who have signed national letters of intent with four-year programs.
Mitchell is the first Blue Dragon men's basketball player to ever sign with the FIU men's basketball program. Three former Blue Dragon football players – Thatcher Starling, Deante Demery and Tayland Humphrey – are the only other Blue Dragons to move into Florida International, which is located in Miami, Florida.
Mitchell, a 6-foot-4 guard from Washington, D.C., played a key role in his two seasons with the Blue Dragons.
This past season, Mitchell averaged a team-high 14.3 points per game while playing in 30 of Hutchinson's 32 games this season. Mitchell started 24 of those games. Mitchell scored in double figures 22 times, breaking the 20-point plateau four times and pouring in a career-high 31 against Northwest Tech on February 5.
Mitchell shot 42.2 percent from the field overall, hitting 50 of 158 3-point attempts (31.6 percent) and 84.8 percent from the free-throw line (112 of 132). Mitchell also averaged 4.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.0 steals per game.
Mitchell was named honorable mention all-Jayhawk West this past season.
Mitchell completed his career with 116 3-point goals, which is fifth most in Blue Dragon men's basketball history. His 83.8 conversion percentage at the free-throw line (218 of 260) ranked third highest in Blue Dragon history.
The 2019-20 Blue Dragons finished 23-9, tied for third in the Jayhawk West and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Region VI Tournament.
